The Wild Dog Safari

An On Safari International Special Interest Safari - Zambia

A unique opportunity for your clients to meet wild dog researcher Kellie Leigh and see the dogs.

The African Wild Dog is one of Africa’s most endangered mammals. A population of wild dogs in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park is the focus of an important research project and participants on this safari will be able to go into the field with the researcher. July is probably the one of the best months to observe wild dogs. The puppies usually come out of the den at this time and the pack is confined to the den site for several weeks until the pups are strong enough to follow the adults. The pack will bring food to the pups and the alpha female in the early mornings and late afternoons with wonderful opportunities for photographs.

Zambia is a wildlife enthusiasts paradise, and in addition to amazing game viewing, also offers superb birdwatching with over 740 species of birds recorded to date.

Naturalist and Managing Director of On Safari International leads the tour.

  • The safari starts in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, moving to Kapani Lodge in South Luangwa National Park for the first three nights. The park is renowned for its large population of predators such as lion and leopard.
  • The group then charters to Kayila Lodge in the Lower Zambezi Valley for two nights with opportunity to game view by boat, by vehicle and on foot.
  • A boat trip down the Zambezi River takes the group to Mwambashi Lodge, deep inside the amazing Lower Zambezi National Park. This is where Kellie Leigh is based and three days are available to look for the wild dogs and the other incredible wildlife in this remote national park.
  • Finally the group charter to Livingstone to spend two nights at Thorntree Lodge, 15km upstream from Victoria Falls. Thorntree is a luxury lodge built on the banks of the Zambezi River and offers a wide range of activities including visits to the Falls, sundowner cruises on the river, visits to Livingstone Museum and market, cultural tours, and the Mosi oa Tunya National Park with the chance of seeing white rhino and other animals.
